The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) has expressed its shock and deep concern following the serious incident involving federal Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines MP, and extended its support to Dr Haines, her family, staff and the wider Wangaratta community.
AFPA President Alex Caruana said the Association was saddened by Monday’s incident outside Dr Haines’electorate office.
“Our thoughts are with Dr Haines and everyone affected by this terrible incident. We sincerely hope she makes a full recovery and recognise how incredibly difficult this must be for her family, friends, colleagues and the community she represents,” Mr Caruana said.
“Dr Haines has been supportive of the AFPA, and we have always appreciated her willingness to listen, engage with us and support our efforts on issues affecting AFP appointees,” Mr Caruana said.
“Dr Haines is a respected member of the Australian Parliament and a dedicated representative of her community. At a time like this, our thoughts should be focused on her wellbeing and ensuring she and those closest to her receive the care and support they need.
The AFPA also acknowledged the courage and quick actions of members of the public who intervened at the scene, along with the efforts of police, paramedics and other emergency services personnel.
Currently, Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and relevant Commonwealth agencies are conducting a coordinated investigation.
Mr Caruana said the officers and investigators involved had an important responsibility to establish the full circumstances and should be supported in carrying out their work.
“The AFP and its partner agencies bring considerable investigative experience and specialist capabilities to matters of this nature. We have confidence in the professionalism of the officers involved and acknowledge the important work they are undertaking.
“The immediate priority remained Dr Haines’ recovery and the wellbeing of everyone affected, including her family, staff and local community. Dr Haines has dedicated herself to serving her community, and right now she deserves the support and compassion of all Australians.
“On behalf of the AFPA and our members, we extend our sincere best wishes to Dr Haines and her family. We hope she receives the very best care and has the support she needs throughout her recovery,” Mr Caruana said.
