AFPA supports more funding towards combatting family and domestic violence

24 April 2025

The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) supports the Coalition’s new $90 million initiative aimed at tackling family and domestic violence throughout Australia.

This significant investment highlights the pressing need for better measures to safeguard vulnerable individuals and communities from the horrific effects of family and domestic violence.

Key elements of the Coalition’s strategy include creating a national domestic violence register and introducing new offenses that specifically target coercive control and technology-facilitated abuse.

These initiatives resonate with the AFPA’s long-standing push for comprehensive national strategies to fight domestic violence and improve community safety.

AFPA President Alex Caruana said that family and domestic violence knows no borders, and it’s crucial for police on the ground to have immediate access to information when investigating family and domestic violence complaints.

“Equipping police with the right information in real-time allows them to make more informed decisions that ultimately benefit the victims of family and domestic violence.

“A system like this will streamline cross-border policing and cut down on the time-consuming checks between different police services.

“The proposed initiatives, especially the national register and the emphasis on coercive control, are major steps forward in protecting victims and holding offenders accountable.

“We’re eager to work with all stakeholders to ensure these measures are effectively implemented,” Mr Caruana said.

The AFPA is dedicated to supporting policies and initiatives from all sides of government or parliament that prioritise the safety of all Australians and tackle the complex issues surrounding family and domestic violence.
