AFPA WELCOMES CONSULTATIVE APPROACH ON NEW ACT POLICING STATIONS

31 July 2025

The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) welcomes the commitment by ACT Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Dr Marisa Paterson MLA and ACT Policing Chief Police Officer Scott Lee APM to involve the AFPA in planning new police stations, as confirmed during the 2024–25 ACT Budget Estimates.

AFPA President Alex Caruana said the move is a significant step toward making sure future police infrastructure meets the operational needs of officers and the broader community.

“We thank Minister Paterson and the Chief Police Officer for committing to genuine consultation with us.

“Modern, fit-for-purpose facilities are essential for effective policing, and we’re keen to offer practical input throughout the process,” Mr Caruana said.

New stations are proposed for the Canberra City area and the Molonglo Valley. These will play an important role in meeting the growing demand across the ACT, particularly as the current City Police Station is outdated and no longer fit for purpose.

Mr Caruana said that ACT Policing deserves facilities that reflect the seriousness and complexity of the work they do every day to keep Canberrans safe.

“We’re committed to working with the Minister, the Chief Police Officer and the ACT Government to ensure the new stations are properly equipped and designed to meet future needs for our members and for the victims who rely on them.

“The Minister’s consultative approach gives us confidence these projects will be developed with integrity, transparency, and a clear focus on outcomes that genuinely support both police and the community,” Mr Caruana said.

The AFPA remains committed to advocating for the infrastructure and resources ACT Policing needs to serve the community and looks forward to contributing to this important planning process and seeing the new facilities delivered to a high standard and on time.
