AFPA WELCOMES PROGRESS TOWARD NEW ACT POLICING INFRASTRUCTURE

25 June 2025

The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) welcomes the ACT Government’s announcement that expressions of interest will soon open for the delivery of a new City Police Station and ACT Policing Headquarters.

The move marks a long-overdue and much-needed step forward in modernising ACT Policing’s infrastructure.

AFPA President Alex Caruana said the Request for Expressions of Interest issued by Infrastructure Canberra this week is a positive sign that the ACT Government is committed towards replacing old and outdated infrastructure for ACT Policing.

“Our members have been operating out of outdated facilities that are no longer fit for purpose. These buildings no longer meet the needs of modern policing or the growing expectations of the Canberra community.

“The proposed new facilities will be vital to delivering accessible, efficient, and community-focused policing,” Mr Caruana said.

The ACT Government has allocated more than $3.8 million for the planning phase, with the aim of identifying suitable property solutions in the city precinct that will support operational readiness, staff wellbeing, and business continuity.

Mr Caruana said the announcement follows years of AFPA advocacy, including direct engagement with ministers and stakeholders on the urgent need for modern police infrastructure.

“We welcome the commitment by Minister Paterson and acknowledge the support of Chief Police Officer Scott Lee in helping to drive this project forward.

“Our frontline officers need facilities that reflect the professionalism and complexity of their work.

“This process is an important step toward delivering the kind of infrastructure ACT Policing needs, not just today, but for the future,” Mr Caruana said.

The AFPA will continue to advocate for frontline officers throughout this process and looks forward to working with Government to ensure the new infrastructure supports the community and the policing workforce alike.
