The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) congratulates Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Australian Labor Party on their re-election to government.
The AFPA looks forward to building a strong partnership with the Albanese Government to advance member welfare, strengthen national security, and enhance the AFP’s ability to protect Australia.
AFPA President Alex Caruana said the Association is eager to work constructively with the government to deliver outcomes that empower AFP members and tackle emerging threats.
“Our members perform critical and often demanding duties across Australia and internationally.
“We are committed to ensuring they have the resources, support, and legislative backing needed to excel in their roles and keep Australians safe,” Mr Caruana said.
The AFPA is focused on several key priorities for the new term of government:
- Implementing the AFP Blue Card to provide vital physical and psychological support for current and former AFP appointees.
- Advocating for legislative reforms to strengthen the AFP’s capabilities and capacity to combat cybercrime, terrorism, and transnational organised crime.
- Securing resources for advanced training, cutting-edge technology, and mental health support to bolster AFP capability and resilience.
- Removing the AFP from the constraints of the workplace bargaining process and the Australian Public Service Commission to enable more tailored and effective employment frameworks and negotiating processes that reflect the unique operational demands of policing and the national security environment.
Mr Caruana said AFP appointees operate on the frontline of organised crime disruption, counter-terrorism, ACT community policing, cyber threat response, child exploitation, securing critical infrastructure, and protecting dignitaries and federal politicians.
“Policing takes a real toll, physically and psychologically. An AFP Blue Card would provide essential support and reassurance to those who dedicate their lives to this vital work.
“We look forward to working with the Albanese Government to bring the AFP Blue Card to life to support past, current and future AFP appointees who make many sacrifices to protect Australia and its many communities.
“The AFPA is committed to partnering with the government to ensure the AFP remains a world-class policing agency, fully equipped to meet the complex challenges of today and the future,” Mr Caruana said.
